Fathers WWII Medals.?

My Father gave his WWII medals to my sisters boys. My sister has since divorced and has little or no contact with her grown sons nor they with my Father. I think the medals should have gone to me and then on to my sons. They are of no value monetary wise as they are the standard issue medals for WWII and theatres served, no VC,s or the like. I have no contact with my Father since my Mothers death this being one of the reasons. Am I wrong in thinking this?
