Is the end near ? Yes or No and tell me why you think so :)?

There are groups out there that believe cataclysmic events like the recent japan tsunami will occur more and more frequently in years to come and claiming that the end of the world is near. Some even predicted one third of the worlds population will be wiped out in a matter of months once these chain of natural disasters come to its climax. But for ordinary people like me and you.. what should we believe ? On on side there are the people reject theseclaims and there are those who advocate it. (Seen this on discovery channel: by studying the compression patterns on artic ice, scientists we able to calculate the average time between each ice age and concluded that we are overdue for an one) So are we on the brink of destruction ?
